December, 6th -7th 2019
·
The Association of European Journalists is organizing
a major conference examining the state of press freedom across Europe. on
December 6th 2019
·
The event is the AEJ’s 2019 Annual Congress. It will
be hosted by the French Section of the AEJ with participation by other national
AEJ sections in at least 20 European countries. It will take place at UNESCO’s headquarters
building in Paris with additional support from the Council of Europe. The
conference room can accommodate up to 200 people.
·
The AEJ’s intention is that the conference will
highlight the acute threats to media freedom and to the vital role of the media
in the democratic process in contemporary Europe. Conclusions and
recommendations from the gathering will be communicated to the relevant
authorities in UNESCO, the Council of Europe and the European Union, reflecting
the urgent need for new measures to safeguard press freedom and the safety and
security of journalists in all parts of Europe.
·
On Saturday December 7th the AEJ will hold its annual General
Assembly at the Maison de Jean-Monnet in Bazoches sur Guyonne about 45 kilometers
west of Paris, with the kind cooperation of the Jean Monnet Association and the
AEJ Belgian Section.
·
Guest speakers at the Conference will include public
figures representing major European institutions, media organisations and press
freedom NGOs, as well as AEJ journalists from various national sections.
·
The AEJ also proposes to invite the presence of students
of journalism as well as high school pupils from the Ile de France region. Special
consideration will be given to providing this special opportunity to young
people from high school which is named after founders of the European project
such as Jean Monnet (Lycée des métiers Jean Monnet de Juvisy-sur-Orge)
·
The Conference will be organized in four round table
discussions focused on the following topics (both in English and in French, translation provided
by Unesco):
Europe is no longer a safe space for journalists
Journalists in Europe now face more antagonism and risks to their
personal safety than ever before. In this new increasingly hostile environment
they experience severe political and financial pressures, smear campaigns and
insults, intimidation and violence. Self-censorship has become commonplace.. .
What more should European journalists do to gain the public’s trust and
to protect democracy?
Is an informed public debate still possible in an age of “Fake News”?
The 2016 Brexit referendum and national and European elections have been
sullied by a flood of fake news, disinformation and political manipulation. The
public debate has become a shouting-match, fuelled by hate speech and Internet
trolls. What can the media do to bring back civilized debate and ensure that
our societies are well-informed?
#Metooinjournalism
Gender-based discrimination may be less extreme in Europe than elsewhere
but European women are too often victims of sexual harassment. Women in the front line of the struggle for
gender equality speak out to the AEJ about their own experiences and their
ongoing campaigns.
Public audiovisual media and illiberal democracies
For more than half a century public service TV and radio have been in
the forefront of building accountable, democratic societies across Europe. But
populism and the rise of “illiberal democracies” have changed the media landscape.
Now public media are starved of funds and losing audiences fast. Is it still
possible to save independent public service media that serve all the citizens,
not just the interests of the governing party. What should be done? ,
Case studies from Eastern and Western Europe; how to win back audiences;
and the ‘dirty politics’ of broadcasting.
